Dice player Mario Sainz has won his first-ever car prize after his blood alcohol content reached 0.03%.
He drove from Brisbane to Melbourne after drinking three cans of beer at a nightclub.
“I think that’s the worst I’ve ever driven, but I did drive a few kilometres,” Mr SainZ said.
“It was a very long drive and I had a lot of gas, and I couldn’t wait to get out of the car.”
Mr SainSainz said he had consumed six to seven beers at the nightclub on Sunday night.
“The drink had me in a very bad way,” he said.
He said he was unaware the alcohol was laced with a psychoactive substance called methylphenidate.
“If you’re going to drive drunk, you’ve got to understand the risks, so I thought that was the best way to go,” he told News.
“You can’t go on an alcohol-free drive without the potential of an accident, and that’s what I did.”
Mr Kowalski said he felt the impact of Mr Sainsz’s actions on Mr SaineZ’s mental health.
“He’s a very bright young man, and he’s also very passionate about his sport,” Mr Kowalksi said.
The young driver said he took his own life on the night he was due to fly to Japan with his parents.
“They’re devastated by what’s happened,” he added.
“We’ve been through a lot and we’ve lost a lot, but we still want to see the world.”
People have taken away so much for us, and they want to do better.
“Hopefully we can continue this and we can see this change in our community.”
The ABC has spoken to the family of MrSainZ.
